Nettles – read this before you poison them

Last year, I was on a friend’s farm here in Baker, and walking around, discovered nettles!  Since there is none on my property, I asked if I could dig some up and take them home to transplant.

The response was initially surprise, then, sure, but get them soon before Bill hits them with Round-up.

That will teach her, she got a 15 minute lecture on the nutritional and medicinal values of this lovely jewel.

Making Herbal Medicine

Herbs are powerful medicine. Do not think for one minute that all herbs are harmless. Herbs can also interact with any medicines you are taking, making them stronger or counteracting some of their properties, so research them well if you are taking any meds.

Herbal preparations.

Infusions (tea) – Probably thherbal teae easiest method to prepare herbal medicine is an infusion, more commonly known as tea. However, for an herbal infusion, it is better to allow the tea to steep for 5 or more minutes. To make an herbal infusion, add boiling water to your herbs, cover with a small plate and allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes. Add sugar or honey if desired, and drink.

When my grandsons lived with me, during the WHOLE school season the boys took elderberry syrup EVERY MORNING. One morning, I grabbed shot glasses to give them their elderberry syrup in, and Jack, the 8 year old smart alec, called it ‘morning whisky’ so from that moment on that’s what we called it – served of course in shot glasses. Every morning, they got ‘morning whisky’ (no alcohol in it at all). No one got a cold or flu the entire school year.
